Wildlife inside your home?

Birds

  • Bird Control

Nature: There are three species of pest birds: pigeons, sparrows, and starlings.

  • Harm/Damage: Pest birds deface buildings and monuments, and present serious health risks. They can carry several serious diseases including: histoplasmosis, salmonella, ornithosis, pseudo tuberculosis, and other diseases. In addition, birds often carry parasites (especially fleas and mites) that may transmit other diseases, and are also involved in the transmission of West Nile Virus.

Moles

  • black moleNature: Moles feed almost exclusively on earthworms, soil insects, and grubs found while tunneling.  If tunnels are active all year round mating will take place. Moles are not rodents; they belong to the group of mammals known as Insectivora, and thus are more closely related to the shrews. Moles can be trapped and removed.

  • Signs: Dirt mounds, holes, and wilted gardens are signs of moles.

Squirrels

  • SquirrelNature: An adult squirrel normally lives alone; but in the cold, share its nest with other squirrels to conserve body heat. Squirrel's eyes are located high, and on each side of their head.  This allows them a wide field of vision, without turning their head.

  • Harm: Squirrels chew on power lines which have caused many major power outages throughout the country.

Raccoons

  • Raccoon

Nature: The raccoon is very easy to recognize. It has a mask and ringed tail and is often referred to as a "masked bandit"

  • Harm: Raccoons can carry the rabies virus and transmit it through its saliva. Main symptoms of rabies include aggressive behavior, impaired mobility, a sickly appearance, and abnormal vocalization. Some may show no signs. Often, rabid raccoons will retire to their den.

Bats

  • Bat

Nature: Bats are very sociable animals, and live in large colonies. Bats live in dark places such as caves, holes in trees and even buildings. Bats sleep during the day and are very active at night.”

  • Harm: Bats are not a danger to people, very few carry rabies, and bats are actually very valuable because they help to control the insect population.
